Tech Billionaires Launch Erebor Bank to Serve Bitcoin and Crypto Startups
A bunch of tech billionaires led by Palmer Luckey, co-founder of navy contractor Anduril, are launching a U.S. financial institution named Erebor to serve startups, including Bitcoin and other crypto companies, according to a Financial Times report.
The financial institution would be backed by tech buyers including the Founder of Venture Capital Firm 8VC Joe Lonsdale, and the co-founder of Defence Group Palantir Peter Thiel’s, according to individuals acquainted with the matter.
Erebor will be run by the CEO of Aer Compliance Owen Rapaport and co-CEOs Jacob Hirshman, who beforehand labored as an adviser at Circle, and the co-founder. The senior government vice-president at New Jersey-based Valley National Bank Mike Hagedorn will serve as president.
“The bank will be a national bank… providing traditional banking products, as well as virtual currency-related products and services, for businesses and individuals,” according to the report.
Erebor’s goal market would be corporations in the U.S. innovation financial system, such as these in digital currencies, synthetic intelligence (AI), defence and manufacturing. It will also serve people who work for or make investments in these corporations, and non-U.S. companies looking for entry to the U.S. banking system.
The financial institution founders purpose to cowl the hole that Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) left serving crypto companies after it failed in March, 2023. Since then, many Bitcoin and crypto startups have struggled to get the same entry to capital from conventional banks.
Erebor stated in the submitting it would “differentiate itself” by working with prospects that “are not well served by traditional or disruptive financial institutions, in particular with respect to insufficient access to credit.”
The financial institution will also be targeted on stablecoins, digital belongings pegged to real-life belongings like the U.S. greenback, according to the report. Erebor goals to become “the most regulated entity conducting and facilitating stablecoin transactions.”
Erebor will be headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, with an further workplace in New York City. Erebor plans to supply all of its providers through digital-only customer support.
