Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has shaken up the corporate crypto leaderboard with a bold $108 million Bitcoin purchase, catapulting it ahead of giants like Tesla and Coinbase in BTC holdings.
📈 13,350 BTC and Climbing: Metaplanet’s Bold Bet
On 30 June, Metaplanet announced the acquisition of 1,005 BTC, bringing its total stash to 13,350 BTC. This move places the firm among the top five global corporate Bitcoin holders, leapfrogging Tesla (11,509 BTC), Coinbase (9,267 BTC), and Galaxy Digital (12,830 BTC).
The company’s aggressive buying spree in June alone saw it accumulate over 5,000 BTC—averaging 1,000 BTC per purchase.
💰 Fueling the Fire: $208M Bond Issuance
To fund its crypto ambitions, Metaplanet issued 30 billion yen (~$208 million) in zero-interest bonds. A portion of the funds will retire existing debt, while the rest is earmarked for further Bitcoin acquisitions. This financial maneuver mirrors the playbook of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), which has long used debt to expand its BTC treasury.
📊 Stock Soars as Investors Cheer
Following the announcement, Metaplanet’s stock jumped 10%, continuing a stellar run that saw it gain 45% in June alone. While Bitcoin itself rose just 3% during the same period, Metaplanet’s performance underscores investor confidence in its crypto-centric strategy.
🎯 The Road to 30K BTC
Despite its impressive haul, Metaplanet is still only halfway to its 2025 goal of 30,000 BTC. With over 16,000 BTC left to acquire, the firm is expected to remain an active buyer in the second half of the year.
